Music links

I found out recently that a few people who I don’t really know, were readers of my little blog.  Specifically the stories.

There is a part of me that just writes and doesn’t really consider an audience for my stuff, so to hear that there were people who looked forward to my next story…well it made me very happy.

And feel a little bit of pressure!

Todays earlier post was a story that I had high hopes for but in the end it just fizzled out into something else.  Almost did not post it but thought it was better to have it somewhere in case I go back to it, than deleted and forgotten.

So just in case you read it and enjoyed it, here is the music I was listening to while I wrote it.  You may see what it all meant!  Links to you tube videos where possible

Dave Gahan – Kingdom – This is where I got the title from.  Love the darkness in this track and if I had to give an example of what I mean when I class something as Goth Disco, then this would be one of the tracks.

Smashing Pumpkins – The Everlasting Gaze – The energy that flows from this track makes me feel awesome, every time I hear it.

The Wonderstuff – Sleep Alone – I love Violins in my rock music.

The Cure – Why cant I be you – really why??  Plus I have no idea what the hell this videos is all about!

Big Country – In a Big Country – This band always makes me feel very proud to be Scottish…Although I am pretty sure that none of them were actually born in Scotland.

Manic Street Preachers – Rewind The Film – The meaning behind this song (at least as far as I am concerned), where you want to go back in time…even just for a little while…just to feel safe again. I have lost count of the amount of times I have started writing a story based around that.  Then stopped, deleted everything and tried again.  I cannot put it properly into words yet.  Hopefully I will.

I’m still pretending It’s not my fault

The constant noise of fingertips drumming on the plastic armrest was really starting to annoy me.  Despite how busy the waiting room was, I could hear it as loud as if it was happening right beside me.

Yet he sat the other side of the room from where I was.
The noise had started a few minutes after I had arrived.  Despite the apparent chaos around me, I heard it.  Looking around, despite how busy the waiting room was,  I eventually managed to pinpoint the culprit.   As the room swam in a sea of grey, he stood out as shining black.  I saw his hand on the chairs armrest and every time he drummed his fingers on it, the sound echoed around my head.  If it had not been for the sunlight that was streaming through the partially damaged blinds of the waiting room, I would have been able to make out his face.

I could not take the sound for too long.  I would like to think that it was a good ten minutes before I cracked but to be honest, I am not sure that it was.  Standing up, I made my way towards him, bumping into strangers and apologising every step of the way.

This place was never as busy as this.  Why today of all days?

As I neared him, the sunlight went behind a cloud and I could see his face for the first time.  The brim of his top hat had been pulled down just enough to hide his eyes in shadow.  A glint of light from his walking cane flashed once, drawing my attention to it.  If he had noticed my approach, he did not register it.  The seat beside him was vacated as the occupant was called forward and I sat down with purpose.

The drumming stopped.

He was smiling.

With my argument now defused, I searched desperately for something to say.  It may not have been the most original way to start a conversation but it was all I had.

“So what are you waiting for?”

Without turning his head, he lifted his cane up with his left hand and pointed at the numbers on the wall.

“When that reaches 888, I can go.”

I looked at the ticket I had been handed.  It was 887.

I showed him my ticket.  “Look I’m just before you”.  I even laughed a little at the coincidence.

He did not reply vocally.  Instead he lowered his cane and turned to face me.  I took this as a sign to continue.

“The last time I was here, they recommended a full reboot.  To be honest I was a little bit sceptical but they assured me that it was for the best.”

His eyes glinted slightly in the rooms ambient light.  Was that anger I saw?  Fear?  I pressed on regardless.  Cannot stand gaps in conversations.  I always feel I have to fill that empty space.

“I am struggling with modern life.  Too much goes on that I cannot understand, no matter how much I try.  So here I am.  They have the reboot ready and I am looking forward to not worrying about the past anymore.”

“You’ve had reboots before?”  His voice was calm and measured.  The tone seemed trustworthy.

I nodded.

“Yet they do not sort the problems?”  It was another strange way to word a question but at least he was talking to me.

“Well they have always been soft reboots.  Just clearing the cache as they say.”

He nodded and then looked straight ahead.  Putting both hands on the top of his cane with purpose.

“So has your life been better after the soft reboots?”

“Well for a little while they are but I keep coming back to the same problems.  That is why I am here.  The Doctors think only a full reboot will solve everything.”

He nodded, took a deep breath and then leaned towards me, his head swivelling round to bring his eyes straight into contact with mine.  Little sparks in the night, they blazed with emotion.

Those eyes.  I felt so small in his presence, lost in the sparkling sight.  His voice was stronger now.

“Do you ever think that maybe your own subconscious is trying to teach you something?  You keep coming up against the same things again and again and yet you never try to deal with them.  I wonder why that is?”

I was lost for words.  The gaze had not broken and I was powerless to look away.  He was surely looking at my soul, such was the intensity of his stare.

“Do you remember your first cat?  Your first holiday?  What about your favourite toy?”

My voice was answering but I was not sure I was in control of it.

“I find myself looking back at photos of my life and wondering who the person in the pictures is, as I cannot honestly say that it is me”

The man nodded and tilted his Top Hat back slightly.  The shadow had mostly fled from his face and I could see him properly for the first time.

“You need to wake up.”

I don’t remember anything after that.  Next thing I knew I was sitting on a bus as it was pulling into my stop.

Had I dreamed it all?

Not sure what I am trying to say with the story.  This is what happens when you watch David Icke on dvd first thing in the morning!

I’m a mile out of Hell and I feel like I’m coming home

The Constantine TV series trailer was released yesterday.  The above is a link to it (since I struggle to embed things recently!!)

Before I give my thoughts on it, let me just explain my relationship with John Constantine

pronunciation

I REALLY HOPE THEY DO THIS IN THE SHOW – or even better, just pronounce it correctly from the beginning!

I first saw John in Alan Moores run on Swamp Thing.  I had bought a couple of old Titan Reprint trades (Black and White interior art) and got hooked.  When John turned up, all swagger and menace, I was hooked again.  The introduction spoke of him looking like Sting and while the artwork did not really get that across perfectly, he definately looked like he meant business.

I even bought a couple of Titan reprints of the Hellblazer series (Again interior Black and White art) and occasionally dipped into the monthly comic.  I always got the feeling I was missing something from the individual issues.  They were enjoyable but I think they work better as part of the whole run.

Then the Keanu version came out.  Now apart from the hair colour and nationality, it was a not bad version of the character.  kinda like a cover version of a song you love.  the cover version is not that good but you can tell there was good intentions in there and as a result, it gains a special place in your heart.

When money permitted, I went and bought the Hellblazer trades from the beginning.  One of the advantages of coming into a comic series late is that you can pick up the whole story at a pace you want and not have to wait for the next issue.  I did this with Preacher, The Invisibles, Doom Patrol and Transmetropolitan and am so glad I did.

Currently I have just finished Trade 4, so I have not read any of  Garth Ennis’s run as yet.  The complexity and depth of the stories in the first four trades just amazes me.

As the powers that be at DC decide that old JC needed to be brought into the mainstream universe, just in time for them to all New 52 it all.  I wanted to give the new version a chance.  He was good in patches in Justice League Dark but overall it was not enough for me to enjoy.

So having got that all out of the way, let me give you my thoughts on the TV version.

Firstly, he looks like Constantine.  that is good.

He sounds like a weird welsh/scouse mix.  I always thought of him speaking with a hard Cockney accent (despite Liverpool being the city of his birth) but my Local Comic Shop owner (they very awesome Asylum Books and Games) once told me that he just thought that Constantine sounded like Mike Carey.

The effects look great.  Now if they can keep that level across the series (I refuse to use season as I am Scottish) then it may have a chance to attract fans of Supernatural and the like.

They seem to have kept Ravenscar and they mention the Newcastle incident, so hopefully this bodes well for using the best of the Hellblazer stories.  Now just a shot of a Mucous Membrane poster in his pad and I will be a happy fanboy.

Overall I liked the trailer.  It made me not worry as much as the initial announcement of the TV series did.

HOWEVER

Where is the Fag???? (cigarette for my non British readers)

John Constantine smokes….like a LOT!! It has been integral to several stories (pre New52 Heckblazer anyway).  It may seem like a small thing but it is little nuances like this that make the character so strong.  The smoking, the haunting by former friends, his politics, the attitude, playing both sides off against each other…all of these and more make up that character and to remove any of them, takes the risk of not portraying him as he should be.  Hell even Keanu smoked, even if the ending of that film he reached for chewing gum instead of cigarettes as he did in the comic (so the internet told me).

So there you have it.  John Constantine makes it to TV.  I wonder that if this is a success, that the Preacher TV series will be allowed to be close to the comics.

Just a thought

For those that are interested….the title of this post is from the Bruce Springsteen song “Better Days”.  not relevant at all but I was listening to it as I typed!

Akira Project – Live Action Trailer

Akira Project – Live Action Trailer: http://youtu.be/t1GO-93Nt3c

This is seriously well done.
I love Akira. The visuals and animation combined to entrance me back when I first saw it (good old vhs days) and the film still looks amazing now.
This fan made live action trailer is far better than I hoped it would be. You can see the dedication and love that everyone involved, has for the source material.
Watch it, love it and share it.
This deserves a big audience.
Plus….Kevin Tran as Kaneda….win!

Of course, us Scots would have used the word “Arse” instead….

I love conspiracies, I really do. i understand if you don’t, or if you think I am mad for loving them.
That’s ok, everyone likes and believes different things.
Hell I am still surprised that anyone reads these posts.
Surprised but very flattered and grateful.

This is a clever piece of work though. THEY LIVE by John Carpenter is one of my favourite films. The idea that we are all being lied to by the media, politics and advertising just resonates with me. I do not buy newspapers any more and rarely read them. Far too much of their content is editorial, what they think rather than just giving their readers the news and allowing them to make up their own mind.
TV news has gone the same way too. Far too often they will have stories about celebrities, television programmes and movies, consigning what is actually happening in the world, to sound bites here and there.
OK I am generalising but I do wish that TV news was actually about just news and leave the entertainment news to the specialist programmes but that is just me.

I may have strayed off topic a bit here!!

Have a watch and if you do not know the film, it would be interesting to see which bits you think are the real news and which is the film.

You may be suprised

Ah that explains it….

A couple of nights ago, during my dream time, amongst the usual strange events and situations, I dreamt of a work colleague. He arrived at work, his eyes red and streaming. In his hands he held a bunch of flowers. I asked him what was wrong and he told me that his hay fever was playing up.
The next day at work I spoke to him about it. He told me that he actually did have hayfever.
Hmmm.
Last night I dreamt of a different colleague. He was selling Action Man Army Tanks from the 1970s for £25. I was excited in my dream as I had owned one in my youth. The dream morphed into me being on holiday and became jagged and random.
Today I spoke to this colleague. He didn’t know what I meant (he is young and hippetty hop) so I went on ebay to show him a picture of one.
The first link I clicked, had the same one I had owned. It was on sale for £24.99!!!!!!

Yup

I am kinda psychic.

I wonder what I will dream of tonight??
